A Domain is Your Online Identity
By Definition, a Domain Name is the unique text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer connected to the Internet located somewhere in world.
A Domain Name is the most fundamental requirement for any website. Essentially, this is your identity on the World Wide Web. Usually it is your business name, such as Walmart or CNN. It can also be the name of your product or service that you offer. The Domain Name will have an extension at the end, called a TLD, for example: .com .net .biz
Some website owners choose letters, numbers, and dashes for their Domain Name. For example, 1-800-my-site.com. Be careful, however, that it is clear to the person typing your Domain Name into an internet browser that you are using the number 0 and not the letter o, and vise versa.
tip: If someone were to ask you for your website URL, you would give them www.my-domain-name.com or http://www.my-domain-name.com.
